So I was sitting here thinking “I really need to write up a blog entry…what should I write about?”. A renovation idea? Naw. Politics? No, I’ve already stirred up enough there. Some upcoming event in the area? Maybe, but I want to write up something people will find interesting. Then I came across an article, and it hit me. The Most Expensive House Ever Sold. I read about it, I looked at the pictures, and you know what I found? When you have a ludicrous amount of money, you can build just about anything you ever dreamed of! Take a look:

Of course you’re going to call me when it’s time to sell your home, right? And when I get there, I’ll be going over these things anyways. However, it never hurts to be prepared and it’s not hard to get a jump on things. When we sell your home, we’re looking to maximize the value, and minimize the time spent on the market. Knowing this, it only makes sense to follow these steps. Let’s get started! (more…)
New Year, New Home (?)

Lots happened in 2015, whether you’re discussing world news, domestic politics, economy, and personal movement from a lot of people. It was a fantastic year for some, a slow year for others, and a painful year for a few. But 2015 is behind us now, and it’s time to look towards 2016! Part of my job is to speculate things to come in the market and advise people when it’s a good time to make their move. Guess what I’m about to say? (more…)

It’s way too early to start talking Christmas, I know, however there are stores gearing up for it already, and believe it or not, there are people that start decorating their homes by now. Ok, I’m not here to judge that…if you want to go all Griswall on the neighbourhood, that’s entirely up to you (good luck with those hydro prices this year though…led bulbs will be your friends!). What I do need to discuss is those people who want to decorate AND are trying to sell at the same time. What to do?? (more…)

Miley Cyrus’s hit could be the theme song for our Ontario Premiere, Kathleen Wynne. I just wrote in my last blog “I know that I’ve slammed politicians before, and I have no doubt that I will again…”. I honestly didn’t think it would be so soon, but with what’s looming over us right now, it’s taking all I have just to keep my language civil! What, you may ask, has me so riled up all of a sudden? Taxes. Yeah, I know, they’re as inevitable as death, but this one could be crippling, and felt across the entire province. (more…)

We’re always looking for ways to improve our homes, whether it’s for our own enjoyment, or to get it ready for sale, and so often we overlook the small things that can have a big impact.
It goes without saying that the hydro service in the home should ideally be breakers, and that the wiring should be updated. But what about the end of the line? Specialty outlets can get expensive, but they can also make a big difference in more ways than one. (more…)
New Site, New Branding!

I am super excited to launch my new website here! Hopefully you’ve all been reading my blog here, and you’ll recognize the format and appearance of the new site. If you follow my blog, you can still get to it through the old url (mjohnston2.com), but it’s now the second page of the whole site Norfolk County Homes! Or NorfolkCountyHomes…I’m still not sure if I should refer to it with the spaces or not.
Having control of my own site allows me to do a few things that I wanted to do before, but I couldn’t. One of which was bring both the website and blog together into one place. Now, if you’re reading my stuff, you can also swing over and check out my new listings, or link right up to MLS, Re/Max, or my office website! I’ve also embedded some forms to make it easier for you to search for the perfect home, or to get a market evaluation for your current home. My goal is to make things as easy a possible for you when it comes to your real estate needs, and help provide all the tools necessary. (more…)
How to Hire a REALTOR

We all know this is an important decision. And we all know that your home is most likely your single most valuable possession. So why do so many people just go with the first agent they meet? Or only ever call the listing agent? (bad idea, btw).
There are a few simple things you can do to make sure that you’re making the right decision, and instead of going over it myself, I’m going to refer to the video that really inspired me to post this. It’s short, sweet, to the point, and it’s spot on.

YouTube really has become an incredible repository for information. It used to be a place for people who owned a camcorder and a cat to upload really cute (read stupid) things, with the occasional just as irrelevant/sometimes entertaining short clip. Oh, and music.
But it’s grown and morphed into something completely different now… (more…)
