Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells

It’s way too early to start talking Christmas, I know, however there are stores gearing up for it already, and believe it or not, there are people that start decorating their homes by now.  Ok, I’m not here to judge that…if you want to go all Griswall on the neighbourhood, that’s entirely up to you (good luck with those hydro prices this year though…led bulbs will be your friends!).  What I do need to discuss is those people who want to decorate AND are trying to sell at the same time.  What to do??

There are camps that will tell you to not place a single Christmas decoration up, for one reason or another.  I kind of sit in a different camp, BUT, it has to be kept reasonable!  My rule of thumb here is, whatever you normally put outside your home, think about doing half.  That way you still embody the spirit of the holidays, but you don’t overwhelm a potential buyer, and worse yet, distract from the home itself.

But when should you start putting up those decorations?  In my opinion, based on a real estate perspective, I don’t think you should be decorating until at least December.  Better yet, wait for snow on the ground, but if you can’t wait for that, wait until the first week of December is coming to a close.

Real Estate is a very emotional and personal purchase for someone, and we all want it to be a happy and smooth transaction. Sometimes, creating happy glowing images of sugar plums, and dancing children around a Christmas dinner table with Grandma and mom in the kitchen laughing over the husbands attempt to carve a turkey…is just the right amount of spice to make someone new feel right at home.
