norfolk county fair 2015It’s that time of year again!  Who doesn’t love a county fair?  No one, that’s who!  And here in Simcoe, we have one of the biggest county fairs Ontario has to offer, the Norfolk County Fair.  It has everything you would expect a great county fair to have…carnival rides, carnival games, carnies, exhibitors, carnival food (can anybody say deep fried butter and chocolate covered bacon?).  There are nightly events, like the annual crash derby, the tractor pull, and there’s always a musical performance.

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot the Re/Max balloon drift over the crowds, and if you’re REALLY lucky, it might be me waving down at you!  Otherwise, I’m either manning the booth we have set up near the doors to the commercial building, or I’m walking around (either with my family, or on my own trying to decide what delicious bit of food is likely to kill me next).

There’s something special, almost nostalgic, about the atmosphere when the sun goes down and the sky is lit up from the lights of rides and food stalls.  A slight cool breeze carries the smells of popcorn and deep fried everything.  The noise of the crowd becomes a din as bells and dings overlay it, the occasional bar from a song cutting through.  You can ignore the shouts from the carnies trying to heckle your money out of your pocket, but you can’t ignore that feeling you get.  The feeling that you’re a kid again, and everything is right in the world.  No problems, no worries, no responsibilities…just…just a certain kind of freedom that very few things can give you.

If you haven’t experienced the Norfolk County Fair, you need to take some time this year to come down and check it out.  I’ll be here waiting for you.  And I swear, this year that big stuffed bear is mine!

Don't forget to check out the derby!
